Today NBC News is running an article that reports on a new case solved with genealogy, and gives some broader perspective: Then, this spring, that company, Parabon NanoLabs, called back, offering to perform a new type of DNA testing that went far beyond the traditional biometric match police labs use.

On Sunday, detectives arrested one of the brothers, who confessed. This seemingly rapid resolution to a long-stalled murder case is becoming something of a trend: It is the fifth cold case solved by Parabon and their researcher, CeCe Moore, since early May, meshing high-tech DNA analysis, traditional genealogical work and the soaring popularity of online ancestry databases.

A sixth, involving an accused serial killer in California, was solved in a similar manner. Some people think this is the next big step in restoring justice to victims, others think is it a major potential invasion of genetic privacy. The dawn of bread 16 Jul Archaeologists working at Shubayqa 1, a site in northeastern Jordan, found tiny fragments of an ancient unleavened bread as they were excavating a hearth.

The site was made by people of the Natufian culture, 14, years ago. The paper describing the discovery, by Amaia Arranz-Otaegui and coworkers, documents the use of a mixed unleavened dough to make bread more than years before the introduction of agriculture in this region of the world. The paper includes a photo of the fireplace and structure where the team found the oldest of the charred bread remains. Figure 2 from Arranz-Otaegui et al.

But five of them were a mixture that included tubers from a plant known as the club rush. Ethnobotanical and experimental evidence indicates club-rush tubers are best consumed as gruel or flour to make bread, instead of boiling or steaming 18, Pure club-rush tuber bread is brittle, crumbly, and flaky, but the addition of bread wheat Triticum aestivum flour i.

Evidence for cereal and club-rush tuber preparations have been identified at late Neolithic sites in Turkey 2 and The Netherlands The finds from Shubayqa 1 suggest a considerably earlier date for their dietary use. The original, in PDF format, is easily blown up to look at the dates for each interval. As social scientists, we wanted to know more about how white people, particularly white nationalists, interpret DNA ancestry tests to justify racial purity. Fast forward to December and the satirical website Cracked.

How and why does a conspiracy theory like this emerge and spread? This piece is worth reading as a contribution to the conversation on DNA and race. I have a slightly different perspective than Donovan on this issue. Such cases point to the real problem that some companies doing business in this area are not maintaining best practices, to say the least. Without commenting on these particular cases, consumers should make themselves aware that some DNA ancestry tests may be unscrupulous or fraudulent.

Indeed, even companies recognized as legitimate businesses may have been reporting results to customers that diverge substantially from the best scientific knowledge about human genetics.

    Dating Blogs Blog Top Sites

All this makes it hard even for experts to tell genuine from fraudulent results in this area, without having access to the algorithms and DNA results. Last year the project disseminated its fieldwork by a very successful blog.

    Dating Blogs Blog Top Sites

Earlier this month, the first post of the new field season details some of their research aims as they try to understand the MSA of the Victoria Falls area. Much of the season was spent looking for sites recorded by Desmond Clark in the s and earlier. Over this period our species, Homo sapiens, evolved, but there were at least two other human ancestors in the region that we know of, Homo naledi and Homo heidelbergensis.

If there were biogeographic boundaries among hominin species in Africa during the last half million years, the Zambezi basin is a key area to understand. Renden Yoder Why did the model fail to generate the real-world phenomenon of ejecta rays? Because the model conditions were too ideal: The jagged landscape, which schoolroom students naturally produced when they haphazardly dumped out their bags of flour, seemed to be the key to creating crater rays.

The team followed-up with more experiments in which they pressed a repeating hexagonal honeycomb pattern into their granular surface and found that they could consistently make rays. Moreover, the number of crater rays depended on only two factors—the size of the impactor and the spacing of the hexagonal bumps. There is a strong rationale to use simple models in physics.

You want the conditions to be easily described with mathematics, and easily replicable by other scientists, so you specify exactly the ideal conditions for the model. But the kids were using an even simpler model, in the sense that anybody can make a pile of flour and throw stuff at it.

What is ideal is not necessarily simple. In this case, the real-world physics of planets and asteroids is more similar to the real-world physics of particles than the ideal physics of surfaces and ballistics. As I read this story, I thought about genetics. The quantification of Neanderthal genetic contributions to humans has likewise been based upon ideal population models and discrete mixture events. These ideal populations may be easy to model with math, but they bear little resemblance to the spatial heterogeneity of living human populations or the irregular temporal distribution of mixture and contact.

What would a more realistic model look like? For human populations, it would have heterogeneity—not populations as single points, but populations with a spatial extent, varying degrees of mixture as they came into contact, and biased growth. Would the outputs of such a model look more like the real world?

    Dating Blogs Blog Top Sites

Possibly there is no real difference, and the more complex models come with a greater danger of overfitting because they add so many parameters. But not all parameters are created equal. My biggest concern about simplistic population models is that they fit data better when new point populations and sources of mixture are added. Reinforcing the antiquity of hominins in China 12 Jul In Nature yesterday, Zhaoyu Zhu and collaborators published a paper describing the paleomag chronology of Shangchena site in Lantian county, China.

The oldest layers bearing stone artifacts at this site appear to be approximately 2. I was really interested in seeing this new archaeological study published. China is taking on a much more important role in human evolution research. The science of human evolution has advanced markedly within China during the last 20 years, just as it has in many other parts of the world.

The Shangchen site shows two things clearly. First, it confirms that there were hominins making stone tools in this part of China by 2. But other archaeologists have questioned the very early dates from Longgupo, so this new Shangchen chronology helps to put the early evidence on a more secure footing. Second, the Shangchen site is not merely one ancient discovery but a long series of archaeological layers.

With seventeen archaeological layers across the period from roughly 1. Figure 3 from Zhu et al. The position of artifact-bearing layers in the deposit is shown at left, while the global paleomag chronology is at far right. There is an impressive correlation between the paleomag signatures at the site and the global paleomag chronology.

Still, seventeen artifact-bearing layers inyears leaves a lot of room for significant changes and hiatuses. At some times, the climate in this region was very arid, the deserts of western and northern China became larger, and huge amounts of dust blew from those deserts and dropped onto this central part of China. At those times, there are some archaeological layers but not too many.

Other times, the climate was moist, less dust blew from the deserts, and stable layers of soils formed on the surface at Shangchen. Those ancient paleosols are richer and denser in stone tool assemblages. So this site seems to show evidence of a long habitation of China by human relatives, but whether it was the same hominin species or population across all that time is not clear.

Whoever was living there, they were responding to the local climate in the way they behaved in this region. Large areas of central and western China are covered in loess from the early Miocene period—as early as 22 million years ago—on up to recent times. During relatively arid periods, desert expanded in western and northern China and Mongolia, generating large amounts of windblown dust. Some of this dust settled in western and central China, creating layers of loess.

Today, a thick succession of loess deposits occur in the Chinese Loess Plateau. The sediment is composed of fine particles that were carried by the wind. Water easily erodes these layers, so gullies and streams create deep cuts across the stratigraphy. Archaeologists have focused on the Pleistocene stratigraphy of the Loess Plateau, surveying these layers where stone tools contrast markedly with the fine-grained loess.

A huge region of China is covered by these ancient windblown sediments, and there have been many, many important archaeological discoveries, from Upper Paleolithic all the way back to the dawn of hominin occupation of China. The paleomagnetic chronology presented in this paper is only one aspect of a much larger program of dating loess events across the Pleistocene.

The systematic approach to identifying these dry time periods with large loess deposits is really important, because it is allowing scientists to tie together ancient landscapes and evaluate tools and fossils from many different sites. For example, the same approach gave rise to the redating of the Gongwangling fossil material by the same research group in They argued that the fossil is around 1.

This program of chronology across sites has been underway for several years, and I think it is going to lead to many more important discoveries. There are older sites. Even within China, Longgupo has an earlier published chronology, and Longgudong is estimated to be as old as the oldest Shangchen layer. In India, there are sites with earlier published evidence, one as old as 2. Any find that demands that we revise our models for human evolution should be supported by multiple lines of evidence.

So when only one or two methods point to the geological age, I want to see more. Even for the new Shangchen chronology, where the paleomagnetic chronology is impressive, we should seek more cross-validation. Still, even with my mistrust of geological age estimates, I have to say that the evidence points against the old idea that the first out-of-Africa dispersal was by stone tool-making Homo erectus within the last 2 million years. With the Gongwangling cranium and the earliest Sangiran material older than 1.

If there was a single, early colonization of Eurasia by hominins, it must have been much earlier than the first occurrence of H. I would suggest instead that there were many movements and dispersals from Africa and back into Africa, starting much earlier than 2 million years ago and extending up to the most recent.

We already know this is true of the Middle and Late Pleistocene—it is not a single dispersal and stasis, there were many partial replacements with interaction of earlier people and new migrants. Hominin occupation of the Chinese Loess Plateau since about 2. New dating of the Homo erectus cranium from Lantian GongwanglingChina. Journal of Human Evolution, 78, The whole site covers an enormous area, with excavations that have been carried out formally and informally for more than a hundred years.
Life after uni What's it like living on a student budget?

More students than ever are stressed about money. Lack of cash even affects how well you eat, and whether or not you can stay on top of your studies. Money and mental health This year the survey probed into what effect money has on student well being. Perhaps unsurprisingly, we received lots comments saying being poor at uni can be a lonely experience.

I ended up feeling really isolated from my new friends because I never had any money to go out and do the things every fresher does. Just as concerning is the link between wealth and well being. Mental health charity Student Minds say: Financial worries can increase mental health difficulties and experiencing mental health difficulties can worsen ability to take care of finances. Asking for help can be tough sometimes, but don't forget there are organisations which exist purely to support students: Student comments — Student life is constantly a battle between surviving and eating and getting an education — All my money goes on rent, I have no money to socialise or even sometimes eat.

Now, most adults have a few more options with this: Both of these options are more limited for full-time students, and moreover the Student Loan leaves you under-funded from day one… The Maintenance Loan STILL isn't enough We bang on about this every year because, every year, students tell us the Maintenance Loan leaves them struggling to get by. Which begs the question: Student maintenance loans should take into account the price of your rent, and it should cover your rent with some left over for food, in case a student cannot rely on parents for funds.

Where do students get their money? Short of magic money trees and Lotto wins, we wanted to know where students find the money for everyday living costs. Here's what you told us.

London Date Ideas – Happenstance, Bikram Yoga & The Island Grill

This is such a huge issue that we created a parental contribution calculator which shows how much parents should be helping their child ren out at uni. The Student Loan remains the go-to for uni cash — which is why not having enough of it can cause serious problems. As predicted last yearthe pressures of covering costs and limited income opportunities means a small number of students continue to rely on gambling and adult work as ways to make money.

Finding extra cash to put aside is a tough ask for many students: Interestingly, we didn't find many tech-savvy savers: Where do students turn in a cash crisis? When you live on very little, even small set-backs can cause big problems. We wanted to know where students turn when things don't go to plan. Once again, parents are a lifeline for most students, with half of you also turning to your bank for overdrafts or loans. I am on the disability register at university.

As far as money goes, I don't qualify for a bursary or anything, so i'm not sure what extra help there is. While the Bank of Mum and Dad remains a top stop for income at any time of the year… The parental contribution is always going to be a thorny issue, with a third of students saying they don't get enough financial support.

Loads of you also feel hard done-by on behalf of your folks, saying uni costs strain family finances and make you feel guilty about asking for help. If it's a loan you have to pay back, why can't you borrow what you really need to get by?

We hear what you're saying; we're waiting for the government to listen up, too. With so many of you telling us the sums just don't add up, we were keen to hear just how you plug the gaps.

What do students spend their money on? Time for the big one: Rent is the biggest gobbler of finances, accounting for almost half of the total — and probably a lot more than you get in Maintenance cash! If that wasn't bad enough, the real strain comes at the start of term, when students are expected to hand over big money for rent in advance.

One cost that might take you by surprise is just how much you have to fork out for your course every month: I don't understand why we get money termly rather than monthly considering that this is not true to life.

Also means if you screw up with the money you have nothing till the next term Do students understand their loans? Taking out the student loan is a bit like getting a mortgage: Not only does that put you on the back foot, it can mean extra and, at times, unnecessary stress. In fact, 3 in 5 of you say you worry about paying back the loan — even though you'll only pay when and if your salary is above an earnings threshhold.

The terms of student loan changed while I was at uni, very unfair.

Pepper dating TV Reclame: Love to Date Campagne

During my UG I was told they wouldnt count to getting a mortgage now they will… It's worth saying that the Student Loan is pretty favourable to students, all things considered. This one comes with a but, however: So, this is either canny thinking by most students — or it's a massive gamble. Most students don't know the ins-and-outs of how the loan works, but then they don't expect to ever pay it all back. Not only the rich.

There's an awful lot of confusion floating around out there about loans, repayments and not having to pay back the loan when you move abroad. Some of that confusion could be avoided if students learned more about money management at school and university and from parents. Unfortunately … that doesn't happen. In fact, the majority of students say the opposite: If that's you — and the stats suggest it probably is — what can you do to protect yourself?

The main thing is: If you're stuck and don't know who to ask, drop us a line in the comments section: Is university good value for money? Our National Student Money Survey doesn't always paint a rosy picture of student finances we're nothing if not completely honest! But let's cut to the chase: I have just finished uni, having had max amount of student finance but still had to work part time the whole way through to survive.

Never had good enough credit score for credit or an overdraft, or enough money to create savings. Now unemployed past yearnot eligible for any benefits because I have a partner who only works part time and I haven't had an income, job, or money in the bank for a year.

I'm completely disheartened by the system. Thinking about life after university Leaving university should mean the start of a new life but, for many students, it's a whole other bag of panic. The real sucker punch?

The big question is why do students across the board expect so little remuneration given they're shelling out increasing amounts of cash on a degree?

London Date Ideas – Gallery Mess, One Canada Square & The Mall Tavern

And, more worrying, why do female students expect to earn less off the bat? This might come back to how little students learn about money before uni: That's kind of what's so exciting and terrifying about being an adult but, undeniably, when you're feeling your way through life, there's lots of insider info and income you're going to miss out on. University is, and always has been, about more than the cost.

It should open the door to new opportunity and experience — but the numbers suggest lots of you are taking a gamble on rising costs and what you get for your money. We found a much greater understanding of the issues and not as much hippy chic liberalism as the press would have you believe.

However current costs are too high. But do they want a fair ride? View this as an infographic The National Student Money Survey is now obviously closed, but we're always interested in your comments: Want to know more about the survey, or need case studies, comments or quotes?
DatingRelationship Advice 37 Comments Back in the dating scene? Perhaps you are recently divorced and now you find yourself exploring available men online. A widower pops up. Have you heard that widowers are great dates, who know what they want and are ready to get it?

Many have been married for several years—in some cases, more than forty years. Many have had comfortable, long-term relationships and have gotten secure in their daily existence. Some may not have ever dated another woman, because they married the first woman they ever met.

A lot of older widowers have grown children; in fact, many may even be grandfathers. Many may not want to live alone. They might be used to a wife who did all the domestic things for them, such as the laundry, grocery shopping, cooking, or even fixing a running toilet. A man who has been married to one woman for over forty years can be challenging. This man has little experience with women, other than his late wife. Dating may be the last thing he ever expected to be doing again.

He has probably been taken care of, coddled, and somewhat controlled. He feels he had the greatest marriage of the century. He takes you to a nice restaurant and much of the conversation centers around his deceased wife. He just wants to tell you all the special things they did together.

Perhaps he invites you to his house, but everywhere you go, even the bathroom, reeks of her. You try not to get your feelings hurt; but alas, it is impossible to believe that he wants anything to do with you, when her presence is everywhere. You wonder why you are even there.

Then there are the children. He may keep you hidden from them at first, not knowing how they will react to their father with another woman. Or, he might introduce you, but they may not want to meet you, or get to know anything about you. They do not want a replacement for their mother. As innocent as you may be, you are now a threat. Such a man may tell you that he is working through his grieving process and that he is trying to learn to love someone again.

It is reminiscent of a kid who is trying to like broccoli. If this advice sounds negative, it is only meant to provide women with a jolt of realism, and to provide widowers with an eye-opener. A widower can be still married in his mind, often feeling guilty, as if he is cheating on his beloved, deceased wife. Does this situation get better with more time? The answer is complicated.

Some widowers get married very quickly after their loss. They want companionship and security again. Then there are those who wait, and wait, and wait some more, unable to commit. If a woman is there at the right time for a widower, then she is in luck. Otherwise, it may be a long haul. Timing may be crucial. Should a woman take a chance and go with the flow? It takes some time for a widower to deal with the loss of his wife and be able to accept another.

A woman must be in synch with her time frame. If patient, you may end up with a gem. Widowers can have wonderful qualities, if you are able to wait it out. But if you are expecting something to develop faster, and if you have expectations of coupling with gusto, your plans may end up in sadness.

Realistically, it takes special effort by both parties to develop a bond after a spouse has died. The gains may outweigh the losses. A woman must carefully evaluate the qualities of a widower and then talk to him openly about her needs.

She must get some answers and then make an intelligent decision to wait or leave. Please follow and like us: Contact Barbara Peters at bpeters thegiftofalifetime.
Pulse[ edit ] On February 22,[22] Xanga introduced "Pulse", which was described as a "carefree miniblog".
