Although it did not become popular until early s yet over the last decade, speed dating has been welcomed by various sections of the society and by men and women of all adult age groups. We shall look at some benefits of speed dating and why going on a speed date is better than trying to meet someone in a bar or a pub.

The foremost benefit of speed dating is that the sole purpose of every man and woman participating in the speed date is to meet someone and commence on a relationship.

This is better than settings at a bar when you do not know for sure if the person you intend to approach would be single or is willing to look for someone. The Keys to Successful Dating for Singles: As the saying goes, there are many fish in the sea. There are tons of women looking for men out there and vice versa. The key to finding them is making yourself available online and offline.

Free Online Dating Site Use These Tips to Find the Right Free Online Dating Site Free online dating services are definitely a medium that people should consider if they are looking for a successful way to find that perfect partner in their lives.

In order to get the best out of these free services, it is crucial that you keep the following points in mind: One of the benefits of free online dating is that they generally have a large client base compared to other "pay to use" dating sites.

This of course does heavily depend on how popular the online dating site is. Because of this large client base, it is essential that you keep your personal safety in mind when communicating with other potential partners. Keep in mind that the reason why these sites have such a big client base is because they are free, which in turn means that people do not have to give out any type of credit card information.

This in turn allows virtually anyone to join these free online dating sites without worrying about giving out any true information, such as their real names and addresses, as well as their age. The potential problem with this is that spammers and minors are usually attracted to this membership model. However, this does not mean that you should never join a free online dating site. You just have to know the right way of doing it.

The first thing you should look for is the free online dating site's overall reputation. The only way that you can find this out is by doing research on the Internet. Go to online forums where people discuss subjects of online dating and find out what people think is the best free online dating site to be a member of.

In addition, look for independent reviews that talk about the sites. By gaining such information, it will make it easier for you to find the right free online dating site to use. The next thing you need to consider is whether or not that site has a good customer service department.

A dating site with an active customer service department will ensure that good screening is practiced as well. This in turn will ensure that they keep unwanted members within the free online dating site out, thus making it a better environment for everybody who are trying to find their perfect partner. The last thing you need to look for is the type of members that are joining the free online dating site. By type, I am referring to their overall geographical locations compared to where you live.

While it can be a romantic thought dating people internationally, in most cases this is impractical. You would need to be able to finally date that person face to face without having to go through too much trouble.

Imagine having to date someone in a totally different continent just to get to know them. By keeping these points in mind, you will be able to find the right free online dating site, which in turn will help you to find the perfect partner to share your life with. Meeting singles is easy with online dating, which allows you to connect with potential lovers around the world.

If you would prefer to find singles in your local area, join sports teams, organizations, or any recreational activities you enjoy.

By doing so, you can meet singles who share the same interests as you. Back to top Single Men and Single Women: Who is Your Ideal Partner? For example, single guys whose looks are painfully average are better off not aiming to date the most beautiful and glamorous single women on the block.

Single men who do that are setting themselves up for failure and disappointment. On the opposite end of the spectrum are singles who aim too low. Single ladies and single men with low self-esteem may assume that they are not worthy of the kind of partner they truly desire. Single Girls and Single Guys: If you feel unattractive, other singles will sense it. Give yourself a makeover by buying some stylish clothes, getting a new haircut, and going to the gym to improve your physique.

At the very least, your date will appreciate the fact that you take good care of your appearance. Are you looking for a life partner or just someone to have a few nights of fun with?

In the vast world of single datingyou are bound to find someone with the same expectations as you but you need to be clear about what you want from the beginning. Think of dating as a fun way to meet new people and make friends. Singles who take dating too seriously end up getting depressed and discouraged because they see each unsuccessful date as a failure. In order to avoid dating burnout, take periodic breaks from the dating scene. This will help you revamp and regain the optimism you need to give off a good impression when meeting singles.

If you start to feel like giving up, take a short break until you feel pumped up enough to re-enter the dating world. A common mistake is not being able to keep up stimulating conversations on dates. When the conversation goes dry, you can pick from one of those topics to spice things up again. Single females find it uncomfortable to sit in silence with a total stranger.

Singles who are successful in the dating arena also take the time to listen to their dates. Actively listen to your dates in order to show them that you are genuinely interested in what they have to say. Another common mistake made in dating happens when single men and single women tell white lies to try to appear more attractive to their dates.

Whether you are meeting singles online or in person, be upfront and honest from the beginning. If you tell little lies about yourself, they will start to accumulate and eventually your date will find out who you really are. It may seem harmless to order a drink or two in order to calm your nerves and grease the social wheels but if you take it too far you will end up a drunk, blathering mess.

Single ladies and single guys alike have complained of potentially wonderful dates being ruined after the introduction of alcohol. If you are known to drink excessively, stay away from alcohol when meeting singles. Singles who know their limits may benefit from a drink or two just to relax and ease tension during a date.
    This is a do-it-yourself procedure.

When fajitas are cooked cut into small slices. Perfect compliments for this divine composition are frijoles and Spanish rice. But they don't call them skirt steaks in San Antonio--they call the fajitas. From what I was able to learn, it seems fajitas are something of a Southern Texas--or Tex-Mex-phenomenon. They have become popular only in the past few years, but they have become very popular.

According to one meat buyer I talked to, "When I put fajitas in the ad, I'll go through betweenand a quarter of a million pounds in a week They even have fajita cooking contests in Southern Texas. I learned that the champion for the past five years was Red Gomez, a butcher from Brownsville, Texas.

I called him to see if he would be willing to share his award-winning recipe with me. Ranchers, who usually butchered their own meat, kept the steaks and roasts for themselves and gave their hands what they considered the less desirable cuts, including the so-called skirt steak, which is a section of the diaphragm. The long, narrow, beltlike strip would be marinated overnight in lime juice to tenderize it.

The next day it was grilled over mesquite, a cheap, plentiful wood that itself has become a cooking fad. The meat was then cut into thin strips, each diner filling a flour tortilla with it and with pico de gallo, a spicy relish of onions, green chilies, tomatoes and cilantro. Those familiar with Mexican dishes may notice the striking similarity between fajitas and tacos al carbon and carne asada.

But tacos al carbon, a fad that preceded fajitas, are made with a better cut of meat that does not need to be marinated and they reach the table already rolled in tortillas. As for carne asada, it is grilled meat and vegetables. The view around here is that fajitas made their way north from the border to Austin about five years ago and began arriving in Dallas two years ago.

For the uninitiated, fajitas If they don't come to the table sizzling from the grill, they are not fit to be called fajitas. In a trend sense, they are even hotter. The Houston Restaurant Assn.

In Pasadena, a restaurant called Manana Mexican Food and Drink of Arroyo parkway has erected a large sign inquiring 'Have you had your fajitas today? They used to almost throw them away, like junk,' said Bud Smith, a Texan who grew up in Pharr, near the Mexican border In Los Angeles, the fajitas trend is so new that the name is virtually unknown outside of restaurants According to Texan sources, fajitas originated in San Antonio.

However, others day the idea came directly from Mexico. Under a different name, arrechera, skirt steak has a venerable history in California. In the early version of fajitas, Zelayeta marinated the meat with vinegar, oil, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper, then added tomato sauce and broiled it. Bywhen 'Elena's Secrets of Mexican Cooking' was published she dropped the tomato sauce and cooked the meat over the coals instead of under the broiler Fajitas have crossed the ocean to Paris, where they are served in Tex-Mex restaurants along with flour tortillas shipped from Amsterdam.

They are also popular in New York and San Francisco Beer is a popular accompaniment to fajitas Welche commented on the meteoric popularity of skirt steak. They ground it into hamburger.

K1 Gifted cook, inspirational leader, respected teacher, social motivator, mom. Elena was born to innkeeping parents living in a small Mexico mining town. Food played an important role in Elena's early life. When she was young, the family relocated to San Francisco. Details of these early years unfold like an interesting menu. Elena married and had children. Her eyesight was compromised early on; soon after her second son was born Elena was totally blind. She re-learned her kitchen and took life one day at a time.

When Elena's husband passed away unexpectedly, she found strength in her culinary experience and used it to support her young sons. Elena opened a restaurant, taught cooking classes, wrote books, started her own business, partnered with major USA food companies, and hosted a TV cooking show.

Characterized by contemporaries as charismatic and fun-loving, Elena's legacy touches every one of us on a deeper human level. Food is the fuel of physical sustenance. Zest for life enables us to savour the meal. Besides keeping house for her family of four, she teaches cooking, gives lectures and writes on cooking. Baking a cake requires precise knowledge of the exact location of everything in the kitchen.

The recipe is memorized and special measuring cups are used, one for one third cup, another for one-fourth cup, another for one-half cup. Eggs are broken into her hand and then the white drains through her spread fingers into the bowl while the yolk remains in the palm of her hand.

After ingredients are mixed, the cake is popped into the oven. After two minute radio programs the cakes is done. Her daily routine includes cleaning her own house, darning, cooking and washing.

Her delicate sense of touch tells her where there is dirt or dust. Stockings are darned over a china egg, her spools of colored thread being marked in Braille. She know foods by their odors, and spices by taste. That year, also, she made her own Christmas presents pounds of Mexican pressed quince paste, cut and wrapped in cellophane.

Zelayeta believes that it is fear that prevents many accomplishmebnts, and that a handicapped person is slowed down by never defeated. She is a charming, vivacious woman who has become popular as a lecturer because of her vivid personality and gayety. Watching her grace and sureness as she goes about preparing delightful Mexican and Spanish food in The Times stage kitchen, it is difficult to believe that she is guided only by her amazing sense of touch She has a talent for teaching others how to duplicate her masterpieces, and at The Times class wil show how to mix and cook such favorites as tamales, chili rellenos, tacos de gallina, enchiladas and ante.

Ante is a delectable custard, cake and fruit dessert concoction. B10 [] "Elena Zelayeta, well-known for her cookbooks on Mexican food, lrelated of few of her recipes for happy living during a recent luncheon in the Costa Mesa County Club.

The year-old blind authoress and food consultant delighted about members of the Friends of the Costa Mesa Library by revealing an ability to be light-hearted about tragedies she has experienced. Zelayeta lost her sight when her youngest son was 1 year old.

After experiencing a normal amount of self-pity she decided to start serving her family. She discharged a housekeeper and cooked her first meal since the loss of her sight. I won't tell you what I did next but we're all still alive. She makes sure tortillas don't burn by turning them until they 'smell' done. Zelayeta began tacing cooking to other blind adults at the San Francisco Center for the Blind. It was cooking so I wrote my first cookbook with the intention of buying a seeing eye dog with the profits.

Zelayeta was born in Mexico of Spanish descent and all her cookbooks deal with the Mexican food with which she is so familiar Soon she was asked by the U. Government to teach a course in 'practical living' at a Lion's Club camp in Montana. I never had a course in psychology. Each of the ones I read disagreed with the others and I thought no one would be able to tell if what I taught was right wrong anyway.

Zelayeta is consultant for a large food- seasoning concern and has served as food adviser for a New York restaurant. H5 [] "Elena Zelayeta was blind, but she opened many eyes to the delights for her native Mexican cookery. More than that, she inspired others to overcome a handicap which once had plunged her into months of despair. And she won the affection of countless admirers, to whom she is known simply as Elena.

Zelayeta died in San Francisco March 31 at the age of Although Elena is gone, her recipes and happy philosophy will live on in her four cookbooks and other writings Born in in Mexicto City, Elena was raised in the mining town of El Mineral del Oro, where her parents were innkeepers.

Her mother and the employes at the inn taught her to cook. The family moved to San Francisco when Elena was a young girl. The came marriage and economic troubles caused by the Depression. When her husband, Lawrence, lost his job as an assistant superintendent in the power department of Bethlehem Steel, Elena sought a way to help. She began by serving lunch in her apartment. And the response was so great, she opened a restaurant in the King George Hotel in downtown San Francisco.

Called Elena's Famous Mexican Restaurant, it was a great success bu kept Elena working 16 to 18 hours a day. She had been operated on for a cateract and had suffered a detached retina. And inshortly before the birth of her second son, Bill, she went blind. Despair, depression and helplessness followed until Elena realized that no one was about to cook and care for her family as she could.

Without the aid of Braille implements, she learned how to measure ingredients, how to separate eggs

Since early times the Indian subcontinent appears to have provided an attractive habitat for human occupation. Toward the south it is effectively sheltered by wide expanses of ocean, which tended to isolate it culturally in ancient times, while to the north it is protected by the massive ranges of the Himalayaswhich also sheltered it from the Arctic winds and the air currents of Central Asia.

Only in the northwest and northeast is there easier access by land, and it was through those two sectors that most of the early contacts with the outside world took place.

Within the framework of hills and mountains represented by the Indo-Iranian borderlands on the west, the Indo-Myanmar borderlands in the east, and the Himalayas to the north, the subcontinent may in broadest terms be divided into two major divisions: The expansive alluvial plain of the river basins provided the environment and focus for the rise of two great phases of city life: To the south of this zone, and separating it from the peninsula proper, is a belt of hills and forests, running generally from west to east and to this day largely inhabited by tribal people.

This belt has played mainly a negative role throughout Indian history in that it remained relatively thinly populated and did not form the focal point of any of the principal regional cultural developments of South Asia. However, it is traversed by various routes linking the more-attractive areas north and south of it. The Narmada Narbada River flows through this belt toward the west, mostly along the Vindhya Rangewhich has long been regarded as the symbolic boundary between northern and southern India.

The northern parts of India represent a series of contrasting regions, each with its own distinctive cultural history and its own distinctive population. In the northwest the valleys of the Baluchistan uplands now largely in BalochistanPak. Its residents, mainly tribal people, are in many respects closely akin to their Iranian neighbours. The adjacent Indus plains are also an area of extremely low rainfall, but the annual flooding of the river in ancient times and the exploitation of its waters by canal irrigation in the modern period have enhanced agricultural productivity, and the population is correspondingly denser than that of Baluchistan.

The Indus valley may be divided into three parts: East of the latter is the Great Indian, or Thar, Desertwhich is in turn bounded on the east by a hill system known as the Aravali Rangethe northernmost extent of the Deccan plateau region.

Beyond them is the hilly region of Rajasthan and the Malwa Plateau. To the south is the Kathiawar Peninsulaforming both geographically and culturally an extension of Rajasthan. All of these regions have a relatively denser population than the preceding group, but for topographical reasons they have tended to be somewhat isolated, at least during historical times. East of the Punjab and Rajasthan, northern India develops into a series of belts running broadly west to east and following the line of the foothills of the Himalayan ranges in the north.

The southern belt consists of a hilly, forested area broken by the numerous escarpments in close association with the Vindhya Range, including the Bhander, Rewaand Kaimur plateaus. Between the hills of central India and the Himalayas lies the Ganges River valley proper, constituting an area of high-density population, moderate rainfall, and high agricultural productivity.

Archaeology suggests that, from the beginning of the 1st millennium bce, rice cultivation has played a large part in supporting this population. The Ganges valley divides into three major parts: The Brahmaputra flows from the northeast, rising from the Tibetan Himalayas and emerging from the mountains into the Assam valley, being bounded on the east by the Patkai Bum Range and the Naga Hills and on the south by the Mikir, KhasiJaintiaand Garo hills.

There is plenty of evidence that influences reached India from the northeast in ancient times, even if they are less prominent than those that arrived from the northwest. Along the Deccan plateau there is a gradual eastward declivity, which dispenses its major river systems—the MahanadiGodavariKrishnaand Kaveri Cauvery —into the Bay of Bengal. Rising some 3, feet 1, metres or more along the western edge of the Deccan, the escarpment known as the Western Ghats traps the moisture of winds from the Arabian Seamost notably during the southwest monsooncreating a tropical monsoon climate along the narrow western littoral and depriving the Deccan of significant precipitation.

The absence of snowpack in the south Indian uplands makes the region dependent entirely on rainfall for its streamflow. The arrival of the southwest monsoon in June is thus a pivotal annual event in peninsular culture. India from the Paleolithic Period to the decline of the Indus civilization The earliest periods of Indian history are known only through reconstructions from archaeological evidence.

Since the late 20th century, much new data has emerged, allowing a far fuller reconstruction than was formerly possible. This section will discuss five major periods: The materials available for a reconstruction of the history of India prior to the 3rd century bce are almost entirely the products of archaeological research.

Traditional and textual sources, transmitted orally for many centuries, are available from the closing centuries of the 2nd millennium bce, but their use depends largely on the extent to which any passage can be dated or associated with archaeological evidence. For the rise of civilization in the Indus valley and for contemporary events in other parts of the subcontinent, the evidence of archaeology is still the principal source of information.

Even when it becomes possible to read the short inscriptions of the Harappan seals, it is unlikely that they will provide much information to supplement other sources. In those circumstances it is necessary to approach the early history of India largely through the eyes of the archaeologists, and it will be wise to retain a balance between an objective assessment of archaeological data and its synthetic interpretation.

The early prehistoric period In the midth century, archaeologists in southern India identified hand axes comparable to those of Stone Age Europe. For nearly a century thereafter, evaluation of a burgeoning body of evidence consisted in the attempt to correlate Indian chronologies with the well-documented European and Mediterranean chronologies.

As the vast majority of early finds were from surface sites, they long remained without precise dates or cultural contexts. More recently, however, the excavation of numerous cave and dune sites has yielded artifacts in association with organic material that can be dated using the carbon method, and the techniques of thermoluminescent and paleomagnetic analysis now permit dating of pottery fragments and other inorganic materials.

Research beginning in the late 20th century has focused on the unique environment of the subcontinent as the context for a cultural evolution analogous to, but not uniform with, that of other regions. Increasing understanding of plate tectonicsto cite one development, has greatly advanced this endeavour. Most outlines of Indian prehistory have employed nomenclature once thought to reflect a worldwide sequence of human cultural evolution.

The European concept of the Old Stone Age, or Paleolithic Period comprising Lower, Middle, and Upper stagesremains useful with regard to South Asia in identifying levels of technology, apart from any universal time line.

Similarly, what has been called the Indian Mesolithic Period Middle Stone Age corresponds in general typological terms to that of Europe. For the subsequent periods, the designations Neolithic Period New Stone Age and Chalcolithic Age Copper-Stone Age also are applied, but increasingly, as archaeology has yielded more-detailed cultural profiles for those periods, scholars have come to emphasize the subsistence bases of early societies—e. The terms Early Harappan and Harappan from the site where remains of a major city of the Indus civilization were discovered in are used primarily in a chronological way but also loosely in a cultural sense, relating respectively to periods or cultures that preceded the appearance of city life in the Indus valley and to the Indus civilization itself.

The Indian Paleolithic The oldest artifacts yet found on the subcontinent, marking what may be called the beginning of the Indian Lower Paleolithiccome from the western end of the Shiwalik Rangenear Rawalpindi in northern Pakistan.

These quartzite pebble tools and flakes date to about two million years ago, according to paleomagnetic analysis, and represent a pre-hand-ax industry of a type that appears to have persisted for an extensive period thereafter. The artifacts are associated with extremely rich sedimentary evidence and fossil fauna, but thus far no correlative hominin i. In the same region the earliest hand axes of the type commonly associated with Acheulean industry have been dated paleomagnetically to aboutyears ago.

The Great Indian Desertstraddling what is now the southern half of the India-Pakistan border, supplied significant archaeological materials in the late 20th century. Hand axes found at Didwana, Rajasthan, similar to those from the Shiwalik Range, yield slightly younger dates of aboutyears ago. Examination of the desert soil strata and other evidence has revealed a correlation between prevailing climates and the successive levels of technology that constitute the Paleolithic.

For example, a prolonged humid phase, as attested by reddish brown soil with a deep profile, appears to have commenced someyears ago and lasted until about 25, years ago, roughly the extent of the Middle Paleolithic Period.

During that time the area of the present desert provided a rich environment for hunting. The Rohri Hills, located at the Indus River margins of the desert, contain a group of sites associated with sources of chert, a type of stone that is a principal raw material for making tools and weapons. Evidence surrounding these chert bands—in an alluvial plain otherwise largely devoid of stone—suggests their development as a major factory centre during the Middle Paleolithic.

The transition in this same region to a drier climate during the period from about 40, to about 25, years ago coincides with the onset of the Upper Paleolithicwhich lasted until about 15, years ago. The basic innovation marking this stage is the production of parallel-sided blades from a prepared core.

Also, tools of the Upper Paleolithic exhibit adaptations for working particular materials, such as leather, wood, and bone. The earliest rock paintings yet discovered in the region date to the Upper Paleolithic.

At the latter, local workers readily identified a weathered Upper Paleolithic limestone carving as a representation of a mother goddess. Mesolithic hunters The progressive diminution in the size of stone artifacts that began in the Middle Paleolithic reached its climax in the small parallel-sided blades and microliths of what has been called the Indian Mesolithic.

A great proliferation of Mesolithic cultures is evident throughout India, although they are known almost exclusively from surface collections of tools. Cultures of this period exhibited a wide variety of subsistence patterns, including hunting and gathering, fishing, and, at least for part of the period, some herding and small-scale agriculture.

It may be inferred from numerous examples that hunting cultures frequently coexisted and interacted with agricultural and pastoral communities. These relationships must have continually varied from region to region as a result of environmental and other factors. Strikingly, such patterns of interaction persisted in the subcontinent throughout the remainder of the prehistoric period and long into the historic, with vestiges still discernible in some areas in the 20th century.

Thus, chronologically, the Mesolithic cultures cover an enormous span. In Sri Lanka several Mesolithic sites have been dated to as early as about 30, years ago, the oldest yet recorded for the period in South Asia. At the other end of the subcontinent, in caves of the Hindu Kush in northern Afghanistanevidence of occupation dating to between 15, and 10, bce represents the Epipaleolithic Stage, which may be considered to fall within the Mesolithic. The domestication of sheep and goats is thought to have begun in this region and period.

Many of the caves and rock shelters of central India contain rock paintings depicting a variety of subjects, including game animals and such human activities as hunting, honey collecting, and dancing.

This art appears to have developed from Upper Paleolithic precursors and reveals much about life in the period. Along with the art have come increasingly clear indications that some of the caves were sites of religious activity.

The earliest agriculturalists and pastoralists Neolithic agriculture in the Indus valley and Baluchistan The Indo-Iranian borderlands form the eastern extension of the Iranian plateau and in some ways mirror the environment of the Fertile Crescent the arc of agricultural lands extending from the Tigris-Euphrates river system to the Nile valley in the Middle East. Across the plateau, lines of communication existed from early antiquity, which would suggest a broad parallelism of developments at both the eastern and western extremities.

During the late 20th century, knowledge of early settlements on the borders of the Indus system and Baluchistan was revolutionized by excavations at Mehrgarh and elsewhere. Principal sites of the Indus civilization. The group of sites at Mehrgarh provides evidence of some five or six thousand years of occupation comprising two major periods, the first from the 8th through the 6th millennium bce and the second from the 5th through the 4th and possibly the 3rd millennium. The earliest evidence occurs in a mound 23 feet 7 metres deep discovered beneath massive alluvial deposits.

Two subphases of Period I are apparent from the mound artifacts. Phase IA, dating to the 8th—7th millennium bce, was an aceramic i. The main tools were stone blades, including lunates and triangles, some probably mounted in wooden hafts with bitumen mastic; a relatively small number of ground stone axes have been found. Domestication of wheat and barley apparently reached the area sometime during this phase, as did that of sheep and goats, although the preponderance of gazelle bones among the animal remains suggests continued dependence on hunting.

Houses of mud brick date from the beginning of this phase and continue throughout the occupation. Accompaniments to the simple burial of human remains included shell or stone-bead necklaces, baskets, and occasionally young caprids both sheep and goats slaughtered for the purpose.

Phase 1B, dating to the 7th—6th millennium, is characterized by the emergence of pottery and improvements in agriculture. By the beginning of Phase 1B, cattle apparently Bos indicusthe Indian humped variety had come to predominate over game animals, as well as over sheep and goats. A new type of building, the small regular compartments of which identify it almost certainly as a granary, first appeared during this phase and became prevalent in Period II, indicating the frequent occurrence of crop surpluses.

Burial took a more elaborate form—a funerary chamber was dug at one end of a pit, and, after inhumation, the chamber was sealed by a mud brick wall. From the latter phase of Period I also come the first small, hand-modeled female figurines of unburned clay. The Period I evidence at Mehrgarh provides a clear picture of an early agricultural settlement exhibiting domestic architecture and a variety of well-established crafts. The use of seashells and of various semiprecious stones, including turquoise and lapis lazuliindicates the existence of trade networks extending from the coast and perhaps also from Central Asia.

Striking changes characterize Period II. It appears that some major tectonic event took place at the beginning of the period c.
The desert city is also called the Golden city thanks to the color it gets from the yellow sandstone used for construction of the buildings. Jaisalmar is one the last big towns in Rajasthan closest to the India-Pakistan border and stands in the heart of the Thar Desert.

Jaisalmer has come a long ways since being an important town along the ancient camel-train route ran through India and Central Asia. Over the centuries, the fortunes of Jaisalmer have risen and fallen thanks to the geo-politics of the region and, of course, emergence of newer trading routes. The rise in sea trade, especially during the British Era, lent a crippling blow to Jaisalmer.

With Independence and the resulting hostility with Pakistan it seemed like Jaisalmer would fall off the map sooner rather than later. The economy of Jaisalmer that once relied on the ancient trade routes was now fuelled by the military installations that mushroomed over the years.

Even though Jaisalmer requires a long detour — the closest big city is Jodhpuralmost km away, and it easily takes at least six hours or an overnight trail to travel the distance — the well-paved roads by Border Roads Organisation or BRO make the journey infinitely easier than it would have otherwise been.

This fort is what forms the center of all tourist activity in Jaisalmer. But there is a lot more to Jaisalmer than the fort. There are the spectacular havelis that have been constructed from the same golden sandstone as the fort, there are the sand dunes which attract hundreds of tourists domestic and international alike and there are the legends… of evil diwans and beautiful damsels and the story of a village that was abandoned almost overnight and remains so even centuries later.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves. The story of Jaisalmer begins, as several fairy tales do, with a prince seeking to prove himself. One of the first acts of the newly-appointed heir was to exile Jaisal from his kingdom. Young Jaisal began looking for a suitable place to establish his new capital and came across a huge triangular rock that rose some feet above the desert sands around it.

The rock provided a good vantage point to survey the lands below. On the rock was a sage called Eesul who informed Jaisal that Krishna had prophesized the arrival of his descendant who would establish a kingdom at the very spot. Jaisal, who hailed from the Yaduvanshi clan to which Krishna belonged, took this as a sign and stopped looking for newer spots. InJaisal built a small mud fort and named it after himself. It was thus that Jaisalmer was born.

In Jaisalmer saw the first jauhar or the act of mass suicide by women when the armies of Alauddin Khilji descended upon the city after the Bhatis raided one of his treasure caravans. Following this Jaisalmer remained abandoned for some years before the Bhatis returned to their city.

About two centuries later, yet another Turkic ruler of Delhi, Firuz Shah Tughluq laid siege to Jaisalmer after a Jaisalmer prince stole his prize steed.

This led to the death of 16, women and the death of soldiers including the ruler, Rawal Dudu and his son Tilaski. And Jaisalmer was more or less abandoned again. And while they ruled from here with considerable independence, Jaisalmer came on the radar of Amir Ali, an Afghan chieftain.

The crafty warrior sought the permission of the ruler, Rawal Lunakaran, to let his wives visit the queens of Jaisalmer but sent his soldiers instead in the covered palanquins.

In what may well have been a scene from an earlier day Troy, the soldiers emerged out of hiding and took the Jaisalmer guards by surprise. The hassled king ordered the killing of the women because there was no time to light a funeral pyre. In a cruel twist of fate, though, the Jaisalmer guards overpowered the invaders and Amir Ali was blown up by a cannonball.

In any case, the early centuries since the foundation of Jaisalmer were troublesome in part because the rulers primarily depended on looting. As you may have surmised, the rulers themselves were the reason for the fall of Jaisalmer the first two times! In any case, as centuries passed, Jaisalmer began to prosper in part because of its very strategic position along the trade route. The prosperity continued right up until the time of the British when sea routes opened up.

This led to the population of Jaisalmer moving out of the city towards literally greener pastures. After Partition, the land routes to Pakistan were cut off and it seemed albeit for a short time that the prophesy may not have factored a fourth silent invasion — that of the changing economy. Military installations came up and tourism began to boom all over again.

Jaisalmer seemed to have almost returned from the dead! Sightseeing in Jaisalmer Unlike the other tourist centers of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer is slightly off the grid. But there are some must-visit places in Jaisalmer, skipping which would probably be blasphemous.

We begin our journey at: Jaisalmer Fort One of the largest fortifications on the planet, Jaisalmer Fort is the only living fort in Rajasthan. Home to some 3, people, Jaisalmer Fort has within its walls houses and businesses, homestays and cafes and temples galore. Its sandstone walls lend the fort a golden hue thus giving it the sobriquet, Sonar Quila or Golden Fort. Being a living fort makes Jaisalmer extremely unique and making it very easy to imagine what life inside the fort must have been all those centuries ago.

Jaisalmer Fort has 99 bastions of which 92 were built between and alone! Today, these lookouts serve as vantage points for tourists. A part of the palace stands over Hawa Pol Gate of Winds and offers views of the square that was and remains the center of most activity within the fort. Almost all the rooms have quite small doorways, built for the express purpose of forcing the entrant to bow and stoop as they enter.

Within the palace is Rang Mahal the excuisideely painted and mirrored room that served as the bedroom of Mulraj II and is without a doubt one the biggest attraction of the palace. Other attractions in the palace include a gallery of sculptures, a display of stamps of the erstwhile states of Rajputana and a balcony that served as a venue for the drummers who would raise an alarm to alert the populace of an advancing enemy. Note that the audio guide is compulsory here.

Fort Palace, Jaisalmer Fort timings: April to October 8am to 6pm; November to March: These seven Jain temples were built between 12th and 15th centuries and are connected to each other by corridors and walkways. Shitalnath temple is dedicated to the 10th tirthankar by the same name and then there is the temple of Sambhavnath. The last two temples — that of Shantinath and Kunthunath — with their numerous sensual carvings are bound to make you blush. Jain Temples, Jaisalmer Fort timings: These were constructed for each of the five sons of an exceptionally rich trader who made his fortune in jewelry and brocade.

These havelis have been constructed in the same sandstone as the fort. One of these havelis is out of bounds for public since it is owned privately but the other have been converted into museums. The havelis with their intricate carvings and views of the fort also offer an insight into just how rich the small town of Jaisalmer really was.

If you are interested in history and culture, it is very easy to lose track of time in these havelis. Unfortunately, unlike Jaisalmer Fort there is no audio guide available the local guides to tend to rush you through the havelis. Patwa ki Haveli timings: The haveli served as the residence of the prime minister of Jaisalmer has some exquisite carvings on the outside and some beautiful paintings on the inside. The first floor is particularly beautiful with paintings that have used a kilo and a half of gold leaf.

The haveli has two wings that belonged to two competitive brothers. But it was this very competitive spirit that has resulted in the haveli being so exquisitely beautiful. Nathmal ki Haveli timings: The garden stands at the foot of a hill and the several chattris or cenotaphs stand in memory of the late rulers of Jaisalmer. Note that there are no bodies here and the tombs are empty.

Vyas Chhatri Standing on the edge of the city, Vyas Chhatri is dedicated to Vyasa, the author of and a character in the epic Mahabharata.

Vyas Chhatri has several cenotaphs dedicated to honor those who have passed away and serves as a cremation ground for the Pushkarana Brahmin community. The museum set up by a chap called LN Khatri who serves as a local historian and storyteller offers insights into the culture of the region. On display in the Thar Heritage Museum are fossils and portraits, photos and sculptures, portraits and manuscripts as well as weapons and kitchen equipment.

Gadisar Lake Gadisar Lake or Gadsisar Lake is named after Gadsi Singh and is an artificial reservoir that, untilwas the only source of water supply to the city. The banks of Gadisar Lake are dotted by several small temples and shrines that make a visit to this place even more attractive. Take a boat ride in the lake and feed the several catfish or simply sit by the banks and watch the waterfowls that migrate here during the winters.

Kuldhara The abandoned village of Kuldhara is also a long way off from Jaisalmer Fort. Located some 35 km from the fort along Barmer Road, Kuldhara was until recently a hidden gem of Jaisalmer.

However the recent campaign of Rajasthan Tourism featured the village and it is only a matter of time before it becomes popular. The story of Kuldhara in Jaisalmer is one that has intrigued many.

It involves, as most stories do, a beautiful damsel. This young girl whose name has been lost in the pages of history belonged to a family of Paliwal Brahmins. Hers was one of the many Paliwal Brahmin families in the village of Kuldhara that stands at the edge of the Thar Desert. The Paliwal Brahmins were a resourceful lot. They developed smart irrigation techniques and cultivated in what may have otherwise remained barren land.

These irrigation techniques are practiced, almost unchanged, even to this day. But we stray from our story. The village of Kuldhara was in the realm of the king of Jaisalmer. His diwan was a certain Salim Singh. The story as we hear it paints Salim as a cruel and power-hungry man who even dared to build his home a storey taller than that of the king. In return, the king promptly ordered the extra storey to be demolished. In any case, Salim Singh held a lot of sway not just in the court of the king but also exerted his powers in the kingdom.

It is said that people hated Salim, who would often levy unreasonable taxes on farmers and traders but little could be done.
